‍New Collection

GRAČANICA

After two field trips in 2021 and 2023 and extensive post-processing work, we have published the new collection of Monastery Grachanica. The collection includes over five thousand pictures out of the fifteen thousand taken during our visits to the monastery. The panorama movie walk offers a unique view of the monastery church interior, showcasing the splendid fresco paintings from the period of King Milutin in the 14th century. This collection replaces the one created in 2004.

This collection was created through cooperation between the BLAGO Fund, the Serbian Academy of Art and Science, and the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of Serbia.

B‍LAGO 2024: IN REVIEW

BLAGO had an active year in 2024. We visited the monasteries of Ravanica, Koporin, and Sisojevac, creating material for the upcoming public collections. At the same time, we published comprehensive collections of the monasteries Sisojevac, Naupara, Rudenica, and Ljubostinja. The highlight of our work in 2024 was the publication of the new Monastery Grachanica collection, which had been in the making for a few years.

While collecting and publishing heritage is our primary activity, we also actively promote it and our work. By organizing a session at the International Medieval Congress in Leeds, UK, we established a platform for participants from Serbia and scholars of Serbian heritage from the US.

As our material is published under licenses that allow for free usage with attribution, we receive many monthly requests for reprints and republications. Many of our pictures have also found their way into the OrthoPrax app, available on Android and Apple platforms.

2025 promises exciting work, as we will be involved in several projects in Kosovo and Metohija. We also plan and hope for our first visit to several sites around Skopje, Macedonia.

We need help with funding and volunteering to continue our work. If you like what you see, please donate.

Monastery St Sisoje

The Sisojevac Monastery, located at the source of the Crnica River near Ćuprije and close to the Ravanica Monastery, has a rich history. Its origins are linked to the priest Sisoj, mentioned in a charter by Princess Milica from 1398 when she was known as nun Evgenija. It is believed that the monastery church of the Transfiguration was built during this time. However, some opinions suggest that the church is much older and that Sisoj only renovated it. Additionally, it is thought that the church was originally constructed as a manor house by lord Crep Vukoslavić and later became a monastery after the arrival of monk Sisoj.

FULL OF GRACE / БЛАГОДАТНА

This richly illustrated book presents depictions of the Mother of God in Serbian medieval wall paintings. A unique, high-quality edition, with exquisite photographs accompanied by the texts written by Bishop Maksim Vasiljević and Ivana Lemcool, art historian Ph.D.
